    Until 1904, all members of the fire department were volunteers, but on April 1st,the Common council authorized that personnel be paid and the department was then comprised of 14 paid men and 15 call men with the exempt firemen held as reserves.

    The department became motorized in 1912 when a car was purchased for the Chief. This vehicle carried chemicals and a roll of hose. Early fire trucks at first had no roofs so that when approaching a fire, the men could look up to see the building and assess what action needed to be taken to knock the fire down.

    Today the Gloversville Fire Department is equipped with the latest technology and equipment which includes a thermal imager to locate victims in a smoke filled building, air packs, and a safety trailer which teaches fire safety and procedures to children.

    COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AGENCY REGULAR BOARD MEETING Mayor’s Conference Room January 14, 2014 MINUTES A regular meeting of the Community Development Agency Board of Directors was held Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 3:30 PM in the Mayor’s conference room at City Hall. Those in attendance: Steven Kirk, Ron Briggs, Mayor Dayton King, Jean Chain, Karen Smith, Nick Zabawsky and Rachel Frasier.  A motion was made by Ron Briggs and seconded by Mayor Dayton King to accept the minutes from the previous meeting. All in favor.  The rehab status report was presented. One housing project was completed in December. One housing project is under construction. Three jobs will be going out to bid this week. It was suggested by Ron Briggs that Nick Zabawsky provide a powerpoint presentation on the housing rehab program for the benefit of the new Board members at the next meeting. All were in agreement.  The CDA program income report was presented for the month of December 2013. The account balance was $34,750.60 at the end of December 2013.
